Retail therapy: Richmonds Top3 by Design

For those suffering from a case of department store indecision, remedy is at hand. Top3 began in 2001 with a simple concept: showcase the best examples of homewares in a  shop that celebrates good design and cuts out the crap. Fifteen years on, founder Terri Winter has opened a new Richmond store, the fourth for the company.

"We love the appreciation for design we get in Melbourne," Winter says. The airy store has its own footprint, while keeping some constant themes, such as the vent metal shelving and signature wood panelling. In one departure from its former digs on Toorak Road, the new store has a lot more colour. "At first the painters were freaking out," Winter says.

Central to Top3's mission is to dispel the assumption that good design has to cost big money, with many items priced with gifts or small treats in mind. And while trends come and go, Winter still loves the classic: the Iittala Aalto vase, which was designed in 1936. "At the time it was really groundbreaking and is still as modern today as it would have been then. Truly classic design transcends styles and trends."
