The beauty is in the details when it comes to this meticulously designed step ladder. Created by the experimental design lab Metaphys and Hasegawa Kogyo Co, a top manufacturer of ladders and scaffolding in Japan since 1956.
Winning one of its first Awards back in 2009, this exceptional ladder has since received many more design accolades, including the Red Dot Design, Good Design and JIDA Design Museum selection awards.

The one-touch bar can be lifted and folded, eliminating the common worry of getting your hands pinched when using it. In addition, despite its simple structure, the top plate and steps have a wave-shaped design that is non-slip. The steps are also wide, making it suitable for anyone. It stands on its own, so it has a beautiful appearance and blends in with the space and furniture, making it a "stepladder that doesn't need to be hidden." |

After a thorough survey of stepladders used at home, they found that in most cases people use chairs instead of stepladders. The main reason for using chairs is that even though people know that chairs are unstable and dangerous, stepladders are stored in closets or storage rooms and are a hassle to take out.
As a manufacturer they were thinking about preventing accidents during use, and wanted to change this, so they created a product that would be "able to be kept in a place where it can be used immediately in order to increase the usage rate of stepladders."

THE STORY
Development of Lucano began in 2007. At the time, most stepladders were silver, the colour of aluminium, which gave them a rough and unrefined appearance and made them out of place in stylish or everyday living spaces.
So, Hasegawa Kogyo first launched a black stepladder that would not spoil the space. It completely overturned the conventional notion that stepladders are silver.
With this launch as a trigger, they started developing design products that would fit in any space.

This led to the answer: "We want to provide a product that doesn't look out of place even when placed in a room." From there, we started joint product development with Metaphys, a design consortium brand led by product designer Tomoaki Murata, with the development concept of "a stepladder that can be left out and not hidden."
Lucano was born, with a design that creates a simple impression by hiding all screws from the outside and making the cross sections of the posts and steps triangular to reduce the number of surfaces in view, and a beautiful design that stands on its own when folded.
