Hand dyed with natural indigo. The pattern is created completely by hand through a system of knots in the fabric. The placing of the knots produces the different patterns.
This 100% linen cushion cover is hand-dyed with natural Indigo, an organic compound and a natural dye extracted from plants with a distinctive blue colour. The maker is master-dyer Tigidankay Daramy, a traditional Gara dyer. Tigi uses gara cloth (gara refers to the leaves of the Indigo plant), which is a symbol of national identity in Sierra Leone, Tigi’s home country. Gara dyeing involves a process of pounding the Indigo plant’s leaves together and soaking them in water for many days, adding a root from another plant to darken the dye. The pattern is created by hand through a system of knots in the fabric. This particular pattern resembles a diamond in a mosaic pattern.
Historically, chiefs and warriors used traditionally woven cloth dyed with gara for ceremonial dress, weddings, and gifts for important people. Today, the word gara is used to describe the dyeing process and products. Because each cushion cover is handmade, the pattern on each cushion is unique.
