Honest Design, true to materials and it's process.
Tom Fereday develops products based on the principle of honest design, conveying a design process which celebrates the materials and manufacturing processes behind furniture and products, to design from the inside out.
Born in Australia, Tom Fereday grew up in England studying at the Wimbledon School of Art before moving to Sydney to complete an honours in Industrial Design at the University of Technology Sydney. Working across Europe and Australia Tom Fereday went onto found his sole practice in 2014.
We asked Tom 3 Questions we were keen to hear his thoughts on:
1. Tell us about your designs and the process involved? How do your designs usually come about?
I try to develop products based on the principle of honest design, conveying a design process which celebrates the materials and manufacturing processes behind furniture and products, to design from the inside out. By using the materials and environment as a positive design constraint I hope to guide intelligent and thoughtful design outcomes which connect with people through natural materials, tactile finishes and unique design.
2. How do you feel about the replica industry (in Australia) and how has it affected your designs?
Replica products affect every aspect of the design industry from manufacture to end user. However I try to focus on quality products with longevity in mind and for me there is no competition to replica products when you can offer quality design and manufacture.
3. What are your hopes for the future of design in Australia?
To be respected on a par with any other country in the world :)
