We received the very first samples to Australia of the Schotten & Hansen x Janua Pigmented timber surfaces and they are beautiful!.. and so robust! We unveiled them as part of Saturday Indesign in Melbourne - and put their stain-resistance to the test.

At top3 by design, we have always embraced colour, and we know many of our clients share that passion. Designers naturally look to fabrics, rugs, paint, wallpapers, and natural stone as their primary tools for bringing colour into a space. Yet when it came to timber, options have traditionally been limited. If you wanted coloured timber, it meant paint or stain , solutions that demand ongoing maintenance and are often sealed with lacquer, muting the natural beauty of the wood.
That is why we are so thrilled by the innovation from Schotten & Hansen: a revolutionary pigment process now available on Janua and Freifrau timber surfaces. This breakthrough gives designers an entirely new way to infuse colour into timber without compromising its natural character. It is nothing short of a game-changer, expanding the creative palette and adding a powerful new tool to the designer’s colour toolbox.

Saturday Indesign in Melbourne was such an energising experience, and I was thrilled to be part of it. Throughout the day, I hosted presentations every half hour, walking guests through the remarkable Schotten & Hansen pigment process for Janua and Freifrau timber surfaces.
|
Over the course of the day we welcomed around 300 guests, and I never tired of sharing this innovation. Each session brought a new audience, and with them, a fresh wave of enthusiasm. There was a palpable moment when people realised the true benefits of this technology — the durability, the natural finish, and above all, the creative freedom it unlocks. Those lightbulb moments reminded me exactly why this process is such a game changer.
|
|
For designers, it opens an entirely new world of possibilities: colour that enhances timber rather than conceals it, and palettes that expand their creative toolbox without compromising on authenticity or longevity.
It was a privilege to see so many people connect with the vision behind this innovation. For me, the day wasn’t just about showcasing a process — it was about sharing a passion for design, and watching it spark inspiration in others.

"After this pigmentation process. You will never ever stain the table again... never" - Christian Seisenberger, CEO + Founder, Janua
|
We put it to the test with a bottle of shiraz.... and a very messy waitress (aka: me) Volia! A wipe over and as good as new, because the surface is now protected from stains and moisture getting in.!
|
Why doesn't the wood stain?
The short answer: the colour pigments completely fill the pores of the timber, leaving no room for moisture to get in.
The process begins by blasting the timber with very hot water, which opens the pores of the wood. These pores are then filled with the natural pigment colour of your choice, saturating every cavity and leaving no space for moisture to penetrate. Once pigmented, the surface is sealed with an emulsion of natural resins, waxes, and oils that provide lasting protection.
These natural pigments, the same types that have been used since Roman times and even in ancient cave paintings, ensure both beauty and durability.
|
The natural pigments become part of the wood, not just on it.

Seamless Synergy of Colour and Material
After mixing and matching colour combinations with the surfaces, we all had so much fun exploring the possibilities. The only thing more exciting than the process itself is imagining what interior designers and our clients will dream up next!
|
The first samples showcasing this process are the Janua Basket table tops in 5 different shades.
The Schotten & Hansen pigmented colour option is available on all indoor Janua and Freifrau surfaces.
As a guide to price... the side tables with the Schotten & Hansen pigmented oak surfaces are similar in pricing to the lower price categories of stone.
