After a few years in Germany and France, he began working as a silversmith in Copenhagen. In the 1930s he realised there was something particularly lively about wood, and his wooden figures have made him one of the great pioneers of Danish art manufacture. Happily, Kay Bojesen was far too curious to restrict himself to the work of refining metals, and he began experimenting with other materials. In the course of his exploration, he discovered wood as a material with very special possibilities for industrial treatment and styling. This discovery led to the classic guardsmen and a whole zoological garden taking shape between his hands. Kay Bojesen's premise in his work was a conviction that his objects should have life, blood and a heart. People should want to pick them up, and they should radiate humanity, warmth and vibrancy. The monkey was produced in accordance with Bojesen's motto that lines should smile. In the early 1950s, it was so popular that it was exhibited at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. In 1990, Rosendahl bought the rights to the production, marketing and sale of Kay Bojesen's guardsmen and wooden animal family. Kay Bojesen's productions are characterised by an inherent sense of simplicity, naturalness and clean lines.

The large bird comes in a soft, warm taupe and, at 11 cm in height, is slightly smaller than the others in Kay Bojesen’s popular series of songbirds, while the small bird at 6 cm, with a body in a delicate soft pink, is the same size – and just as cute – as the birds you know from the Kay Bojesen mobile in the Babies series with birds and balls in wood, painted in various colours.
To mark the inherent connection of the bird pair, the heads of both Liv&Lykke birds are painted in the same passionate peach colour and with identical cream-white beaks. A symbol that whether they are close together or apart, they will always look after each other. Liv&Lykke is shaped by love, hope, and care – and a deeply rooted tribute to life itself.
No matter what story you tell, Liv&Lykke adds a new loving chapter to the history of Danish design and Kay Bojesen’s original stories made of wood since 1922.
For example, let both birds stand together in the bedroom during the child’s very first months as a nest of happiness as fine as the softest feathers, and then let the large bird fly with the little child into the nursery – or vice versa. And later in life, you can give the now grown child the small bird to take to boarding school or on a trip abroad and keep the large bird at home as a beautiful and life-giving symbol of everlasting connections, unconditional love, and hope for a happy future for a young person.
As this special dualistic design icon, the Liv&Lykke bird pair will also be the perfect gift for the new big sister or brother or as a loving greeting between two friends, symbolising life’s big and small moments, a focus on togetherness and happy times together.
With their elegant and universal soft red colours, the Liv&Lykke pair will stand as a forever heartwarming bouquet in bird form, fitting perfectly into any home. And just as the Liv&Lykke name naturally exudes life happiness and familial connection, the colours are also full of symbolism. The gentle and warm red shades are, of course, the colours of love and symbolise precisely that sense of everlasting unity, closeness, and emotional happiness that embraces life’s small and large miracles – and give Liv&Lykke a balanced and harmonious look that will create a nest of life and happiness wherever they are placed.
Kay Bojesen crafted his first wooden figurine in 1922, and ten years later, he opened a shop and workshop on Bredgade in Copenhagen. Ever since, Kay Bojesen has been synonymous with original Danish design and is known for his playful universe of iconic wooden figurines, created with incredible attention to detail, infused with humour and the joy of unique quality craftsmanship.
That is why we say Kay Bojesen has been original since 1922.
