When it comes to designing chair frames, it is often the case that practical considerations lead the way. This is a pattern that, with Theia, Sebastian Herkner was looking to disrupt, turning the frame of this chair into its core aesthetic element.
In this, his second design for Freifrau, his concept was to fuse the frame and the seating shell – not just in technical, but in optical terms, too. This is something he achieved by deliberately extending the frame into the back of the shell.

Looking at the Theia Armchair, it certainly has something of an inset gemstone about it – and this is a deliberate reference. With his new model Theia, Sebastian Herkner has made the chair the jewel in the crown of any room, placing equal emphasis both on the upholstery and the frame as design elements in such a way as the viewer sees them as one.

In the back of the chair, a space is enveloped by the flowing lines of the frame, emphasising the concept and highlighting the lightness of the model.

The Theia Armchair is available both with low and high armrests, with a range of materials and colours offering a multitude of custom configurations.

top3 deep dive into freifrau + janua >

What started back in 2012 as a one-man show has now, in little more than a decade, become an established European design brand: Freifrau Manufaktur. Operating from Lemgo, a small town in Westphalia, Germany, this exclusive manufacturer of seating furniture is characterised by the highest possible levels of comfort, lovingly-rendered details, and exacting quality and sustainability standards.

When, in 2012, trained carpenter Hansjörg Helweg decided to resign from his job, he had a clear vision in his mind – and set up Freifrau, a brand for seating furniture which, right from its beginnings, has always been different.

Freifrau furniture is elegant, stylish, and, true to the meaning of its name in German (literally ‘free woman’), often decidedly feminine. That’s why the various collections are called by female forenames – that, and because the names give them a personality.

A favourite here at top3 by design, The Leya series, introduced as a single model and then developed into a teeming collection of chairs, armchairs, benches, barstools, rocking and swinging chairs, has proven to be a real milestone on Freifrau’s journey. Supreme quality and comfort and unmistakable style.

Designed seating, and something personal, too, that´s what Freifrau stands for: “We have the great fortune of working with an upholsterer in the region,” says Hansjörg Helweg, “where we can easily carry out quality checks on fabrics.” This enables Freifrau to retain its exceptionally high standards for leather and textile coverings while also allowing customers to personalise their pieces with their own choice of fabric. Freifrau products only ever ‘wear’ the finest apparel!

Birgit Hoffmann, Creative Director at Freifrau from day one, working with Christoph Kahleyss, with whom she runs a design bureau, is the woman behind the Amelie and Leya lines, as well as several other Freifrau products. Another part of her role is to manage cooperation with new designers as they help the brand to expand its product range in an organic, authentic way.

Freifrau's stable of designers includes world-renowned names such as Sebastian Herkner (Ona and Theia), and Hanne Willmann (Nana)

Sebastian Herkner was born in 1981 in Bad Mergentheim. He studied product design at the HfG Offenbach am Main (Offenbach University of Art and Design), already focusing during his studies on designing objects and furniture merging various cultural contexts, combining new technologies with traditional craftsmanship in order to highlight the multifaceted beauty of the materials and draw renewed attention to small details.

Whilst still a student, Herkner did an internship with Stella McCartney in London, which helped to hone his feeling for materials, colours, structures and textures. Since founding his own design studio in Offenbach am Main in 2006, he has designed products for manufacturers such as ClassiCon, Very Wood by Gervasoni, Moroso, Sancal, La Chance and Rosenthal, as well as working on interior design projects and for exhibitions and museums. Since 2007 he has taught several courses at HfG Offenbach am Main as visiting lecturer. His designs have received multiple prizes, for example the 2011 German Design Award in the Newcomer category.
